Hong Kong provides a fitting stage for the finale of the Greatest Race on Earth. The marathon starts on Nathan Road, which since the turn of the nineteenth century has formed the spine of the Kowloon peninsula. Still in the darkness of early morning, the huge mass of eager runners backs up from the start line, towards the famous Star Ferry Terminal. Nathan Road, once known as ‘Nathan’s Folly’ for the grandness of its proportions, is never less than jam-packed amid the hustle and bustle of the largest and busiest marathon of GROE.
The course pits runners against some significant gradients over the bridge spans, but the conditions are likely to be good and runners may feel they have enough energy to run vigorously. It is advisable to save aggression for later, where greater advantage can be gained on more trying parts of the course.
Passing through Central, home to Hong Kong’s most breathtaking skyscrapers, the route takes in a combination of flyovers and underpasses before arriving at the final stretch to the finish line. This last section entails further rapid and frequent changes of gradient and can defeat tired runners. Runners fight their way through this final grueling stretch of the course to the long-awaited finish line.
GROE resonates with the history of each of its host cities. Here in Hong Kong, at the end of a long and challenging road, each member of the team has played their part, and the result is an achievement that will live long in each of their memories.
